Award Winning Team:

Winner of the Best Health and Safety Initiative by a Small Business at the 2010 Safeguard New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards.

Since their inception in 2005, these awards have become known and respected by industry as recognizing and celebrating the very best health and safety initiatives in the country.

Over 120 businesses within New Zealand entered this year’s awards. The competition was very tough.

The Small Business Award won by Liddell’s is awarded for a successful initiative devised by a smaller organization, which face similar health and safety challenges as the big players but with far fewer resources. The winning initiative by Liddell’s was for a computer software programme Liddell’s developed using an audio-visual approach. The interactive programme will be used to assess each staff member’s understanding of important health and safety issues. Liddell’s plan to use the programme as an assessment of applicants health and safety knowledge during recruitment, as part of their induction programme and as training for their staff.

Winners at the EEO Trust 2010 Work and Life Awards:

The EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) Work and Life Awards, celebrate organisations that actively invest in their businesses by investing in their workforce, whatever the economic weather. The Awards attracted more than 40 entries this year.

The Skills Highway Award: Winner – Liddell Contracting, Greymouth.

This award category celebrates employers who invest in their staff to ensure their full potential is tapped.

To address literacy, language and numeracy problems, Liddell Contracting and training partner Karoro Business Training, developed Building Bridges, a programme that offered 1 to 2 hours tutoring to individual staff, using real workplace documentation, to get on top of literacy and numeracy issues.

Liddell’s recruit the best skilled staff, and sometimes this means recruiting from all over the world. As some of our staff speak English as a second language, their learning needs were addressed separately with one-to-one tutoring across a range of workplace activities such as emailing, phone conversations and speaking with clients. Paperwork errors decreased dramatically.

Liddell Contracting now provides literacy and numeracy training for all their apprentices.
